The DEFY G5 Gimbal

DEFY G5 Gimbal System and the Camera Stabilizer Wars

The MOVI blew us all away. We all have to admit it. We all know what it is. We all want one… We really want one. There is a downside to it: You need $15,000 for the M10 and $5,000 for the M5. The model numbers denote the weight each model is rated for. Obviously, for something like a RED, you would need the M10, but the M5 can handle your standard DSLR flavors; Canon 5D markIII, markII, Nikon D800, etc.

Gimbals: They’re that great:

Now, don’t get me wrong, friends; MOVI is worth every penny! It is truly a revolutionary product, and when you can pair it with a remote follow focus and operator, wireless monitoring, and a remote pan/tilt operator, you become Cinematography Superman, capable of executing difficult shots with the flick of a wrist. Smack the focus puller on the bum, say “Good work,” and go eat some dinner, loving the fact that you actually completed a quality production in half the time it took you to do so in the past, marveling at your former primitiveness. All you would be lacking is some LED lights with wings!

Another thing the MOVI brought about was a slew of competition in the brushless gimbal world. After the MOVI announcement, these puppies started popping up everywhere in only a matter of weeks. Most of them didn’t impress me, but one has managed to stand out from the crowd and catch my eye: The DEFY G5 Gimbal.

You’re the MOVI… Move Over Maybe?:

Now, I can’t actually say if it’s better than the M5 or not. What I do know is that the G5 is quite a bit less expensive, clocking in at a tantalizing $3,200 and that includes a Pelican case, batteries for about 4 hours of stabilized deliciousness, and a charger. That’s a hard deal to beat! In my opinion it may not be perfect, but the savings are well worth it (it also looks pretty slick). Judge it for yourself in the video below:

DEFY is also working on a version that can haul a RED around, which I’m obviously excited about (G10?). I haven’t heard anything about the price of it, but looking at the models they already have available, I think it’s safe to say that the M10 is in for some stiff competition, at least from we indie guys.

Conclusion:

I’m excited about the DEFY Gimbals and certainly wish I could get my hands on the unreleased one to tote the Scarlet around for awhile. For now, I want you to hold in your mind this beautiful image I’m seeing of a DEFY G5 paired with a Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera. Mmm… Now, THAT would be fingerlickin’ good!

What do you guys think? Do you have your heart set on something different? What did you think of the video?
